Photo by FRED TONE Under Unusual Circumstances Officers Selected For Faculty Senate Officers for the 1976-77 Faculty Senate were elected on the first ballot April 20. According to former Senate Chairman Shir ley Browning and se veral other faculty members, a first bal lot election of all four officers is rare. New officers in clude James Vinson, Chairman: Robert Trul- linger, First Vice- Chairman; Lloyd Re mington, Second Vice Chairman; and William .Bruce, Secretary. ^-Elections proce dures for Senate offi cers is as follows. Each of the 16 Sena tors are included on the ballot. All Sena tors vote for one offi cer at a time and all Senators all eligable for office. A Senator must re ceive a majority plus one vote to be elect ed. It usually takes at least two ballots to elect an officer, often many more. Each of the newly elected Senate offi cers received between 11 and 14 votes on the first ballot, accord ing to sources. New Senate Chairman Vinson neither out- rightly confirmed or denied the existance of an unofficial slate of candidates when con tacted by the Ridge- runner. Second Vice- Chairman Remington and Secretary Bruce re fused comment to the Ridgerunner about the ment speaker. Chancellor Highsmith outlined the Long Range Plan of the UNC Board of Governors. He said the report contained "several important mat ters" concerning UNC-A: (1) a probable coordi nated nursing program between UNC-A and WCU, (2) "expected coopera tion" for graduate students between the two schools, and (3) approval of UNC-A's management program. The Chancellor re viewed the Faculty Ten ure Document as approv- Stating "we need to take a more positive approach to the needs of the students here," Board of Trustees Stu dent Affairs Committee Chairman Hoyle Blanton presented the final draft of the Five Year Plan on Student Ser vices to the Board Wednesday April 21. Blanton said the key word to the prob lems dealt with by^the Elan is "apathy" and said everyone involved with the university is responsible. He called for a general meeting of UNC-A administra tors to develop a "sound recommendation" on inter-collegiate athletics. Chancellor High smith emphasized that student service prob lems at UNC-A result from a large number of commutor students and few dorm students. He said he will present the Board a comprehen sive statement on inte collegiate athletics and will discuss the financing of a new dorm jor Tom with Chapel Hill. The Chancellor said that if the state can provide an adequate base for the new dorm/ student center complex, an increase in student fees to maintain the building is likely.
